Father Fosbery Death Founder Fasta
On Thursday, May 5, close to his 89th birthday, Argentine Dominican Father Aníbal Fosbery, co-founder and member of the ICUSTA honor council, passed away. Fr. Fosbery was one of the first and main managers of our network since its inception. For twenty years, Fr. Aníbal served as Rector of the Universidad del Norte Santo Tomás de Aquino in Tucumán, after which he founded the FASTA University in the city of Mar del Plata, of which he was Grand Chancellor until recently. Both universities were part of the six initial institutions that constituted ICUSTA. We had the joy of having him actively participate in many of our biennial conferences, including the last two, in Avila and Houston.
In his outstanding priestly, academic and apostolic career, he stands out for having founded and chaired the Catholic movement FASTA (Fraternity of Groups of Saint Thomas Aquinas), a community of laity, priests and consecrated women, with a presence in Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, Peru and Democratic Republic of Congo. Doctor in Theology from the Pontifical University Santo Tomás “Angelicum” in Rome, Fray Aníbal Fosbery published numerous books, such as the award-winning work “La Cultura Católica”, gave multiple conferences in various countries, was vice president for America of the Thomas Aquinas International Society (SITA) and corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Possessed of great charisma and remarkable leadership capacity, he served as prior provincial of the Order of Preachers, president of the Organization of Catholic Universities of Latin America and member of the Board of Directors of the International Federation of Catholic Universities, among several other positions.
But, above all, for many of us the “priest” Fosbery was a great friend, a spiritual guide and a role model in the mission of promoting a passion for truth in the service of humanity. On behalf of the International Council of Universities in the spirit of Saint Thomas Aquinas, we express our most sincere condolences to all members of FASTA University, as well as to the relatives and close friends of R.P. Aníbal Fosbery, O.P. Surely he, from heaven, looks at us with his characteristic smile and repeats once again: “at your orders!”.
